2020 Mistelle

The nose has a lovely floral lift reminiscent of spring flowers, paired seamlessly with bright fruit. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with punchy acid to balance out the natural fruit sweetness.

Production Notes

Unfortunately, all the fruit grown at Conmara in 2020 was affected by smoke taint because of the bushfires this summer. Not willing to let 2020 slide by without making a single wine Bob and Helen hatched a plan with winemaker Jo Marsh to pick some Chardonnay early in the season to make a Mistelle. Mistelle is produced by adding a neutral spirit to unfermented or partially fermented grape juice.

Smoke taint is caused by the accumulation of volatile phenols in the vines and fruit during a bushfire event.  These phenols react with grape sugars and become bound.  Fermentation releases these phenols, which then can negatively impact any wine made from affected fruit. For this reason, our Mistelle did not undergo any fermentation prior for fortification.

The fruit for this product was the only fruit that Bob and Helen were able to harvest this vintage and the resulting wine is delicious and was worth the punt. They predict this product will become a new favourite in the cellar door and become a staple in the Bush Track range.
